Challenge
Customers of E-Sci, the e-commerce site owned by Efston Science, were experiencing difficulty locating items on the online website. This problem was compounded by the increasing number of products featured on the site. Although a site specific search engine existed, it lacked any structured results hierarchy.
Solutions / Method
Product results are now listed alphabetically and rated. Ratings are set in three levels. High level ratings are for product name matches, medium level rankings match short descriptions of products, and the low level ratings match long descriptions of products only.
By redefining the searchable fields within the database and organizing the priority list of these fields our work resulted in an enhanced, site specific search engine able to efficiently display and rate all products appropriate to the search criteria requested.
Conclusion
Customers of E-Sci can now find products more efficiently. The database can grow significantly without concern of user navigational problems reducing sales instead of increasing them.
